COTA Australia has provided a submission to the Inspector General of Aged Care to inform their progress report on the implementation of the recommendations of the Aged Care Royal Commission.
The submission argues that, despite the implementation of many of the commission’s recommendations, significant improvement is needed for older people to get the aged care services they require.
The submission makes overall comments about the progress of the commission’s recommendations including references to how the interface between health and aged care can be improved, the importance of rights in aged care being enforceable, the need for an independent Complaints Commissioner, the impact of delaying the Support at Home program, the contribution of Care Finders and designing an aged care system for diversity, complexity and individuality.
The needs and supports that assist older people access aged care across key entry stages are discussed as a helpful way to identify the gaps and barriers older people face when seeking aged care, and to ensure that older people receive the supports and information they need. This includes ensuring an accurate understanding of aged care wait times & availability.
