FAQs

COTA Australia promotes the rights, interests and good futures of Australians as we age. We are a not-for-profit peak body representing Australians over 50 years of age. Because we don't consider people over 50 as ‘ageing’, we use the tagline ‘for older Australians’ to more accurately reflect our work.

COTA is an abbreviation of our full name, Council on the Ageing.

COTA Australia receives government funding through the Department of Health, as well as funding for specific projects which vary from time to time. We also offer consulting services and attract some revenue through those efforts. State/Territory COTAs make a small financial contribution too.

Yes, there is a COTA in every State or Territory of Australia.

COTA Australia is an advocacy organisation which lobbies for action at a national level on issues affecting older Australians.  We offer resources that can provide support or help for you or someone you are supporting.  If you would like to have your say or want to be more involved, our Take Action page is regularly updated with opportunities for community engagement.

If you require assistance for specific issues, you can contact your local State/Territory COTA who will be able to provide information and advice. Click here for more information.

Organisational membership options and benefits vary from State to State, please contact your local COTA for further information.

Organisations and Seniors clubs can also subscribe as members of COTA Australia, keeping them informed with up-to-date news, resources and Take Action opportunities.

We engage with our members for their views and voice, through a variety of engagement strategies that include consultation, surveys, focus groups, webinars, public forums, COTA volunteers (including those on Boards and Policy Councils), eDM’s, newsletters and the National Policy Council.
