On Monday 27 July there will be a test of Australia’s new emergency alert system AusAlert. You do not have to do anything with the test alert. It is just confirming you will receive the alert in times of life-threatening events.
What is AusAlert?
AusAlert is Australia’s new emergency alert system, (not just a general alert system), sending near-instant warnings to compatible mobile phones, tablets and smartwatches during disasters, including events like bushfires, floods, and security threats The alerts are designed to reach people quickly with life-saving instructions during emergencies.
Who receives it, and why
Anyone with a compatible device (generally made from 2019 onwards) in an affected area will receive an AusAlert. They’re designed to reach people quickly with life-saving instructions during emergencies. Older Australians may find alerts sudden or confusing, so it helps to have a trusted person on hand to explain them.
How does it work?
Alerts utilise cell-broadcast technology to instantly alert compatible devices within a targeted area using a loud siren and vibration, even if the device is set to silent or “do not disturb”, and on-screen messages that look and sound different to a normal text and will come through even if your device is on silent or do not disturb. And line users may receive alerts with spoken instructions.
What to do when you get one
You don’t need to do anything when you get the test message – but you will know that you can receive them. In an emergency if you receive an alert, you should rRead the message carefully, ask someone you trust for help if needed, and follow the instructions given.
Managing or turning off alerts
Alerts should generally stay on, as they carry critical safety information. However, if they cause distress, settings can be adjusted, or certain features turned off, on compatible devices. If needed, devices can be turned off or set to aeroplane mode beforehand.

AusAlert was created by the Australian Government through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
