To help older Australians navigate the detail, COTA Austalia has produced this year’s Policy Alert, a fourteen-page analysis of the budget and its implications for people aged 50 and over.

In this Policy Alert, we provide more information for you about the 2025 Federal Budget, announced Tuesday 25th March

In this policy alert, we analyse the 2024 Federal Budget announcements across key policy areas affecting older people including housing, health, retirement incomes, aged care, mature employment, digital and the 2024/25 Women’s Budget Statement.

COTA Australia looks forward to working with the Government to improve the position of older Australians. We are pleased to see the bipartisan agenda for a better aged care system will continue.

It is understandable that the Budget ’spin’ focused on current short term crises (e.g. COVID, floods, cost of living pressures) it is important and welcome that long term reform measures are also outlined in Budget papers.

Aged Care Reform was the centrepiece of this year’s Federal Budget, both in policy and financial terms. Apart from aged care there are not huge gains in this Budget.

While alternate solutions to reform challenges have been provided by the two Commissioners, COTA Australia does not see this as any barrier to commencing urgent reform. Both Commissioners argued for major transformation of our aged care system.
