COTA Australia has provided a submission letter to the Senate Select Committee Inquiry on Intergenerational Inequity.
In the submission we raise some concern that the current media and policy debate on housing, risks intergenerational conflict rather than solidarity.
We outline the experience of inequity for different older population cohorts and the causes of inequity in Australian housing tenures.
Some policy options are also discussed. In addition to increasing the supply of public and community housing and enhancing Commonwealth Rent Assistance, we also raise the importance of work on alternative housing models and potential steps to make it easier for older people to downsize if they choose to.
