Senate Inquiry Submission – menopause and perimenopause

COTA Australia’s submission to the Senate Community Affairs References Committee highlights the disturbing and costly issues of ageism and gender inequity in workplaces, particularly affecting employees experiencing menopause and perimenopause. This gendered ageism hinders many older women from fully participating in the economy, further disadvantaging them in accessing equal opportunities in paid work.

Recognising menopause as a natural transition for over half the population is vital for fostering supportive work environments. By valuing the experiences and expertise of older women, Australian workplaces and businesses can enhance performance, resilience, engagement, and career opportunities, ultimately benefiting the nation’s economic and social wellbeing.

This submission draws on current research, COTA Australia’s policy positions, and insights from older women engaged in our February 2024 focus groups. We extend our appreciation to these women for sharing their lived experiences and highlighting the impacts that menopause and perimenopause is having (or has had) on their workforce participation.
