Reminiscing Story Cards – we all have a story to tell

Reminiscing Cards or Memory Cards are a wonderful and positive way to connect and are often used as a conversation starter between  patients and carers, support workers, family or friends.  We all have a story to tell and sometimes with a little prompting, we may have more stories stored away in our memories than we thought!

By reminiscing or reflecting on our experiences throughout life and with a focus on the positive and a focus on our strengths, it has been proven to have a positive affect on our mood  When the cards are used  in a supportive environment it reminds the older person and the support worker or family or friends of the depth of their experiences and resourcefulness.

Aged care staff can use the Story Cards with an individual older person by giving them the opportunity to select and talk about a card or cards. Case managers can use the Story Cards to get to know their clients when developing care plans, while direct care workers can use them to promote reminiscing and to get to know the older person in a more meaningful way.

The boxed Story Cards can be purchased as a single purchase or as a bulk purchase of 10 sets or more.
1 set of boxed cards is $60 plus gst and postage.

Because there are so many Story Cards, they are best used over time rather than in a single session. Organisations and individuals will be best placed to decide how to maximise the use and the benefit of these helpful resources.

The Reminiscent Story Cards have been developed to be used as an easy, simple approach.

The story cards have been developed to provide prompts that enable older people to reminisce.  They have been developed around three themes and progress from simple questions to more complex questions. (From section A to C).
The three themes are:

  • Beginnings
  • Strengths and successes
  • Challenges and wisdom

There are 15 – 16 cards for each theme. The beginnings cards aim to provide an overview of who you are. They encourage you to share briefly about your beginnings, your family, childhood, school, friendships, work and relationships. The cards on strengths and successes help you to focus on happy experiences and achievements.  The third theme on challenges and wisdom focuses on people in your life, your values and traditions, lessons you have learnt and your legacy.

Note: It is also recognised that peoples stories are very personal and that all staff who use the cards need to be sensitive to their needs. The principle of “Do no Harm” is an important one and all staff must be aware that on occasions further discussion with a more appropriately trained professional may be required.
